Occhio particle size and shape analyzers, are the collaboration of many years of 
focused research in the fields of optics, lighting, and digital imaging.

Common methods of particle size analysis include laser diffraction, and sieve analysis, 
both of which are based on the assumption that a sample is comprised of spherical particles. 

While these methods of gathering size distribution information, provide usable results, 
they lack in application, when compared with digital imaging technology.

The Area Diameter (also known 
as the Equivalent Disc Diameter 
(ED)) is the diameter of a circle 
having the same area as the particle.

Correlates with laser diffraction
measurements
The Inner Diameter is the diameter of the maximum inscribed circle (the maximum circle lying completely inside the particle).

Correlates with sieve analysis measurements
Circularity is defined as the ratio 
between the equivalent disc 
perimeter and the particle 
perimeter.

The degree to which the projection area of the particle is
similar to a circle, considering the smoothness of the perimeter.

It is often used
for product flow studies

The Bluntness Index is the expression of a “maturity in the abrasion process”. It
specifies how far we are from a perfectly 
rounded shape.

It is most often used to establish abrasive properties in materials.

POWDER DISPERSION METHOD
The sample is fed on to the hopper, either through an adjustable height funnel, or with the addition of an auxiliary dispersion sieve. The hopper vibrates, and the sample travels to the vacuum entry point. Two parallel glass slides provide a laminar flow chamber, so the particles
pass by the lens in an oriented fashion.

Using a special monochromatic blue backlight (Occhio pioneered research showing that certain wave lengths, enhanced particle definition), minimum particle detection moved from 1 micron (White Light) to 200 nanometers. The light is also collimated, and acts like a caliper
